Although there are signs of life in the nation’s 11th largest city, there has been no end to the job cuts at the automakers that have fueled Detroit’s economic engine.
here’s a link to the story and here’s a link to the slideshow
some of the pictures i took last summer for a different story but they never ran. i’m glad to see they’re getting used.

the cincinnati zoo has this wonderful insectarium featuring all kinds of exotic invertebrates. they were nice enough to have me there to photograph some of their exotic critters for this ongoing series i’m working on using a selective lighting on a macro level. getting bugs to cooperate can be pretty difficult. thanks so much to Randy Morgan for being so accommodating.

while recently in Lansing, MI i stopped off at a thrift store on my way back. outside i noticed this placard on which the lettering adhered to it’s surface were curled up from the sun and temperature change. i though it to be a really interesting and bet some typographers could use it as a template to make an interesting font. wish i came across this in typography class. i have more pics if anyone wants to take a crack at it. i call it the “St. Vincent.”

i’m going to be participating in michigan’s slideluck potshow this thursday at the Michigan Theater in downtown ann arbor.
“Slideluck Potshow is a slideshow potluck to which members of the arts, photography,
and media communities bring food, drinks and a maximum of 5 minutes worth of slides.
The evening begins with a couple hours of dining on the home-cooked delights of participants,
while drinking full-bodied red wines and mingling. There is no entrance fee or guest list;
one’s admission is a nice bottle of wine, some lemongrass shrimp salad, squash soup with
bacon and pineapple, or a braised lamb shank with rosemary risotto.
Slideluck Potshow is a forum for exposing editors, curators and artists to new work, while infusing
the arts community with a non-commercial vitality and refreshing exchange. Photojournalists,
painters, video and installation artists, and fashion photographers will all show their work alongside one
another in a spirited and relaxed atmosphere. Presenters will range from the very accomplished and
distinguished to the up and coming, but regardless of status, none is allotted more than 5 minutes for their
slideshow. Participants are encouraged to take creative risks and to not just show their portfolios.”

(sorry)
today i went to the detroit zoo and took some close-up shots of some of the butterflies in their butterfly house. it’s the first shoot i’ve done - not for an assignment - in as long as i can remember. i wanted to apply this lighting technique i’ve read about. i plan to go to some pet stores as well and see what other creepy crawlies i can get my mitts on. this is just the first time out. thanks again to the zoo! click here to see more
