cincinatti insectarium

albino bat cave roach, Eublaberus distanti

the cincinnati zoo has this wonderful insectarium featuring all kinds of exotic invertebrates. they were nice enough to have me there to photograph some of their exotic critters for this ongoing series i’m working on using a selective lighting on a macro level. getting bugs to cooperate can be pretty difficult. thanks so much to Randy Morgan for being so accommodating.

TOTALLY bugging out!

butterflies at the detroit zoo

(sorry)

today i went to the detroit zoo and took some close-up shots of some of the butterflies in their butterfly house. it’s the first shoot i’ve done - not for an assignment - in as long as i can remember. i wanted to apply this lighting technique i’ve read about. i plan to go to some pet stores as well and see what other creepy crawlies i can get my mitts on. this is just the first time out. thanks again to the zoo! click here to see more

the vice president was in grand rapids promoting the war or something. actually touting some “decrease of troops” speak. kind of tough to shoot because you only get so much. a dear friend of mine in dc, chip somodevilla has a lot of experience shooting politics and does it very well.

VHS fish disease 7/1/2007

viral hemorrhagic septicemia

i’ve been working on a piece for the times on the effect this new fish disease called VHS (viral hemorrhagic septicemia). trying to see what the fishermen think about it in lake Michigan. the disease has caused large scale mortalities in rainbow trout and turbot aquaculture operations in Europe and in Pacific herring and pilchard populations along the Pacific Coast of North America. now it’s headed here.

monday, i had to shoot conor oberst of bright eyes. for the past 2 days now i’ve had the song, “total eclipse of the heart” stuck in my head - repeting over and over again. sometimes the Bonnie Tyler version, but mostly the version by Hurra Torpedo.
